MT. JULIET, Tenn. — A routine traffic violation in Mt. Juliet on Sunday afternoon led to the arrest of three individuals accused of stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise from local stores.

According to the Mt. Juliet Police Department, the incident unfolded shortly after 5:15 p.m. on February 2, when officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that failed to use a turn signal. The stop, initially prompted by the minor violation, would soon uncover much more.

During the stop, officers noticed suspicious behavior from the vehicle’s occupants, who were allegedly scouting their next target near Academy Sports. Further investigation revealed stolen items inside the car, including baseball bats and pickleball rackets—both of which had been taken just hours earlier from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store. Police said the store was unaware of the theft at the time of the stop.

The three suspects, a 24-year-old man, a 42-year-old man, and a 43-year-old woman, all from Chicago, were arrested and taken into custody. The stolen merchandise, valued at approximately $7,000, was returned to the store.

The Mt. Juliet Police Department praised the officers for their keen observations and quick action. “Thanks to proactive policing, the stolen merchandise was returned, and these suspects will now be held accountable for their crimes,” the department stated in a social media post.

At this time, no further details have been released, including the identities of the suspects or the specific charges they face. However, the department emphasized the importance of community awareness and vigilance in addressing such crimes.

The case serves as a reminder of how even minor traffic violations can sometimes lead to significant law enforcement outcomes, including the prevention of further theft and the arrest of individuals involved in organized crime.
