MEIGS COUNTY, Tenn. — A tragic boating accident occurred on Sunday, May 4, claiming the life of a 21-year-old man from Putnam County, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). The incident took place on Chickamauga Lake, though authorities have not disclosed the exact location of the event.
At approximately 4 p.m. ET, TWRA officers, along with local emergency personnel, responded to a distress call reporting a boating accident. Preliminary reports reveal that Austin Sigh, of Monterey, had entered the water in an effort to assist in loading an older 16-foot cabin cruiser onto a trailer. Sadly, while in the water, Sigh succumbed to environmental factors.
Authorities recovered Sigh’s body in less than 10 feet of water, and it was later transported to the Meigs County Coroner’s Office. The water temperature at the time of the accident was reported to be 66 degrees Fahrenheit, which could have contributed to the unfortunate incident, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
This marks the fifth boating-related fatality in Tennessee this year, with the previous reported death involving a 19-year-old in Decatur County following a boat accident on Easter Sunday. While the TWRA has not released further details regarding Sunday’s incident, they urge boaters to be cautious and prioritize safety on the water.
The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with boating and the importance of taking proper precautions, particularly in cooler water temperatures. Authorities have not confirmed whether Sigh was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
The TWRA continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatality, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. The family of Austin Sigh has been notified, and their privacy is being respected during this difficult time.
As boating fatalities continue to rise across the state, the TWRA emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant and safe on the water to prevent further tragedies.
