COFFEE COUNTY, Tenn. — A mother was taken into custody after being accused of involvement in the 2023 death of her 3-month-old son, Joseph, who tragically passed away due to fentanyl toxicity.

Coffee County deputies attempted to serve an indictment related to the ongoing investigation into the homicide when the suspect, Julianna Leasure, allegedly locked herself in her vehicle and fled the scene. According to authorities, Leasure led deputies on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds between 80 and 100 miles per hour. During the pursuit, she reportedly crossed the median and drove against oncoming traffic, putting numerous lives in danger.

“We were dealing with a situation where the individual involved was putting the lives of others at risk,” said Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott. “She was speeding recklessly and showing a complete disregard for public safety.”

Leasure is now facing multiple charges, including those related to her son’s death and the events surrounding the chase. District Attorney Northcott expressed the difficulty of cases involving young children, especially when the harm is allegedly caused by a parent.

“The most heartbreaking cases are the ones where an innocent child, who is entrusted to their parent for care and protection, becomes the victim,” Northcott said.

An autopsy revealed that Joseph’s cause of death was fentanyl toxicity, a tragic outcome that highlights the ongoing opioid crisis and its devastating effects on families.

“I can’t think of anything more tragic than the death of an innocent child, especially in such circumstances,” Northcott added.

Leasure is currently being held in custody on multiple charges. However, District Attorney Northcott expressed disappointment with the bond set at $74,000, calling it insufficient given the nature of the case. “I expected a higher bond,” he said. “Given the risk she posed to the community, both in terms of the child’s death and her dangerous flight from law enforcement, it seems that a higher bond was warranted.”

Leasure is scheduled to appear in court later this month as the case continues to unfold.

As the community grapples with the tragedy, authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for the victim, and for the family affected by this heartbreaking loss.
