Spike in Overdoses Prompts Nashville Health Officials to Issue Alert

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Metro Public Health Department issued a SPIKE Alert Wednesday after a troubling increase in overdoses was reported across Davidson County. The surge in overdose incidents, which began on March 2, 2025, has raised concerns among health officials, who say the trend has been detected in various neighborhoods throughout Nashville.

Officials noted that the rise in overdoses is not isolated to one specific area, with the department’s mapping technology showing a widespread occurrence across the city. In light of this, the department is urging residents to take immediate action to help reduce the risk of overdose-related fatalities.

Health officials are advising the public to check in on loved ones, especially those who may be at higher risk of drug use. They are also emphasizing the importance of never using drugs alone, as it significantly increases the likelihood of survival if an overdose occurs. In the event of an overdose, residents are reminded to call 911 right away.

As part of the department’s efforts to mitigate the crisis, officials are recommending the use of fentanyl test strips, which can help individuals detect the presence of fentanyl in drugs, as well as the availability of Narcan. Narcan, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, is available free of charge at the health department’s pharmacy and preventive health clinics.

The Metro Public Health Department is continuing to monitor the situation closely and is encouraging the community to stay informed and take precautions to protect themselves and their families.
