Nashville, TN — The Murfreesboro Police Department is investigating a tragic accident that left a woman critically injured at The Avenue Mall on Medical Center Parkway. The incident occurred Monday afternoon in the parking lot of a local steakhouse, prompting authorities to block off one entrance to the shopping center while they conducted their investigation.
According to police, the accident took place just before 3 p.m. when a modified Honda CRV, designed with an accelerator and brake pedal installed on the passenger side for use as a mail carrier vehicle, was involved in the collision. The driver of the vehicle had reversed out of a parking spot to allow a man in a wheelchair to enter. Another woman was assisting the man when, according to police, his foot inadvertently pressed the accelerator pedal, causing the vehicle to reverse out of control.
The out-of-control CRV struck a parked vehicle and pinned the woman standing between the two vehicles. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the woman was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Authorities have not yet released her identity.
Shortly after 7 p.m., the Murfreesboro Police Department provided an update on social media, describing the incident as a “freak accident” and confirming that the woman was receiving treatment for her injuries. The department stated that the accident is currently under investigation by the MPD Fatal Accident Crash Team.
The crash caused significant disruption to traffic in the area, with the entrance to the mall where the incident occurred being blocked off for several hours. Police advised motorists to avoid the location while the investigation continued.
As of now, no further details about the crash or the individuals involved have been made available. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
