MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A shooting Sunday afternoon at Chelsea Place Apartments on Bradyville Pike resulted in the death of a one-year-old child and left a mother wounded.
The incident has prompted an ongoing investigation by local and state authorities. At around 2:34 p.m., Murfreesboro Police responded to reports of gunfire at the apartment complex.
Upon arrival, officers found the infant with multiple gunshot wounds and the mother suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand.
Despite life-saving efforts from emergency responders, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mother was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injury, which was described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 25-year-old Marquavious Hampton. Following the shooting, Hampton led officers from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office on a brief pursuit.
The suspect reportedly shot himself during the chase and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has been called in to assist with the investigation in Williamson County, while the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division Violent Crime Unit is handling the case in Murfreesboro.
According to law enforcement, all parties involved in the incident were known to each other, and the shooting is believed to be an isolated event.
The incident has left the community shaken, and local officials have expressed their condolences to the grieving family.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
