NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A recently released report from the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) paints a concerning picture of the rising prevalence of underage drinking and alcohol-related incidents across the state. According to the findings, the number of crashes, hospital admissions, and emergency room visits involving young people has surged in recent years, pointing to a growing public health issue.

The TABC’s report, which covers data from 2019 through 2023, reveals a staggering 209% increase in alcohol-related vehicle crashes among individuals aged 13 to 19. This dramatic rise in accidents involving underage drivers highlights a significant escalation in alcohol abuse among teens, a trend that officials say must be addressed with urgency.

The report also notes troubling trends in the realm of healthcare. Alcohol-related hospital admissions for people between the ages of 10 and 20 jumped by 49.4% from 2020 to 2023. Alongside this increase, emergency room visits for the same age group rose by 12.5%, indicating that more young people are seeking medical care due to alcohol-related incidents. These figures further underscore the widespread nature of the issue and its growing impact on the health of Tennessee’s youth.

Beyond motor vehicle crashes and hospital visits, the report also highlights a rise in alcohol-related boating accidents. Between 2019 and 2022, alcohol-related deadly boating crashes increased by 237%, while arrests for boating under the influence surged by 95% from 2020 to 2023. The data paints a troubling picture of alcohol’s pervasive influence on youth activities, both on the road and on the water.

In light of these alarming trends, the TABC has issued a set of recommendations aimed at curbing underage alcohol consumption and mitigating its consequences. Among the proposed measures, the report urges parents to engage in proactive conversations with their children about the dangers of binge drinking and problem drinking. This dialogue, the TABC suggests, could play a pivotal role in reducing risky behavior among teens.

Additionally, the report calls for pediatric healthcare providers to incorporate routine screenings for underage alcohol consumption into their practice. Providers are also encouraged to refer patients to appropriate clinical resources when necessary to ensure that young people receive the support they need to address alcohol-related issues.

The report further emphasizes the need for families to be aware of both the short-term and long-term risks associated with excessive alcohol use. By fostering a deeper understanding of these dangers, the TABC hopes to promote more responsible attitudes toward alcohol among Tennessee’s youth.

On a legislative front, the report suggests that state lawmakers amend existing laws to improve notification processes regarding alcohol-related road fatalities and enhance the sharing of evidence with the TABC. Such legislative action could play a crucial role in creating a more informed and effective response to the growing problem of underage drinking in Tennessee.

Several state agencies collaborated on the report, including the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security, the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Department of Health, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Their combined efforts highlight the multi-faceted nature of the issue and the need for a coordinated approach to address it.

As the data shows, underage drinking and its associated harms are becoming an increasingly urgent problem in Tennessee. With the TABC’s findings and recommendations in hand, state officials, parents, and healthcare providers alike must work together to curb the rising tide of alcohol-related incidents among young people in the state.
