SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is currently examining an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Bedford County on Monday. The incident unfolded after two Bedford County deputies responded to a 911 call regarding a suicidal person making threats in the area of State Route 64.
According to a spokesperson for the TBI, the deputies arrived at the scene in the 2000 block of State Route 64, where they found the individual walking along the road. As the deputies attempted to engage with the man, he reportedly became agitated, shouting and producing a knife. Soon after, he allegedly drew what appeared to be a handgun.
“Reports indicate that, fearing for their safety, the deputies fired at the man, striking him,” a TBI press release stated.
Following the shooting, emergency responders airlifted the man to a Nashville hospital, where he was listed in stable condition as of the latest update. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
The TBI has taken over the investigation at the request of 17th Judicial District Attorney General Rob Carter. The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office has deferred to the TBI for additional information and has not provided further comment at this time.
As part of the investigation, State Route 64 was closed in both directions for several hours, causing significant delays in the area. Erin Zeigler, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, confirmed the road closure due to the ongoing investigation.
The identity of the man involved in the shooting has not yet been released, and the investigation remains ongoing. TBI officials have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward.
