WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is looking into a fatal incident involving a suspect who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading law enforcement on a brief pursuit in Williamson County on Friday afternoon.
According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), deputies initiated the chase at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a license plate reader flagged a vehicle tied to a suspect wanted in connection to a homicide in Murfreesboro.
The vehicle was spotted in the area of Critz Lane and Columbia Avenue.
The pursuit ended when the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Marquavious Hampton, exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby field. Deputies followed Hampton, who was believed to be carrying a firearm at the time. Shortly thereafter, law enforcement discovered Hampton suffering from a gunshot wound.
Hampton was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted intentionally or accidentally.
Murfreesboro Police have verified that Hampton was a suspect in a recent homicide case in their city.
The TBI is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The investigation is ongoing.
