NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In response to concerns over road safety, Metro Councilmembers last fall sponsored a resolution urging the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) to intensify enforcement of major traffic violations, such as drunk driving, speeding, and seat belt offenses. The initiative is aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors and improving the overall safety of Nashville’s roadways.
Councilmember Jacob Kupin, one of the sponsors of the resolution, emphasized the focus of the effort. “We don’t want to be doing regulatory or protection stops. We’re really focused on drunk driving, speeding, seat belt violations — things like that,” Kupin told News 2.
According to preliminary data provided by the MNPD, traffic stops across Davidson County have increased by nearly 43% so far this year compared to the same period last year. This uptick is seen as a direct response to the council’s resolution and an effort to address the rising concerns over road safety in the city.
The data reveals the most significant surge in traffic stops has occurred in the Central precinct, where stops have increased by a staggering 138%. Meanwhile, the South precinct experienced an 83.5% rise, and the North precinct saw a 70.3% jump in stops.
Councilmember Kupin acknowledged the positive impact of the department’s efforts, stating, “I really appreciate that Chief Drake and his team really do listen. They do listen. They do respond to questions and concerns.” Kupin also highlighted the importance of the increased enforcement in light of the dangers on Nashville’s roads. “I’ve seen and heard about folks getting hit and killed on roadways, so if we can make the road safer for everybody, that’s huge,” he added.
In addition to the surge in traffic stops, the MNPD has reported a notable decrease in fatal crashes. Fatalities on Nashville roads are down by 27% compared to the same period last year, offering a glimmer of hope that the increased enforcement efforts are making a difference.
The efforts come as part of a broader strategy to curb dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to fatal accidents. With more officers on the streets and heightened vigilance, the city is aiming to make its roadways safer for all residents and visitors.
As the year progresses, the impact of these increased traffic stops will continue to be closely monitored, with hopes that the trend will lead to even further reductions in road fatalities.
