MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Sunday afternoon, following a barricade situation in a Murfreesboro neighborhood. The incident began as a domestic dispute, but escalated into a standoff, resulting in the death of a man inside his home.
According to the Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD), officers responded to a call at approximately 3:42 p.m. on March 23, in the 2600 block of Goose Creek Lane. Upon arrival, officers encountered a male suspect who allegedly pointed a shotgun at them and made threats. The situation quickly escalated, and two officers fired at the man, who then retreated into the residence.
In response to the developing situation, the MPD’s Special Operations Unit, including SWAT officers, was dispatched to the scene. Despite initial attempts to make contact with the suspect, efforts to resolve the situation peacefully were unsuccessful. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) later confirmed that SWAT officers entered the home and found the man dead inside.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death. No officers involved in the incident were injured.
The TBI has taken over the investigation, which is a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. TBI agents are working to collect evidence, conduct interviews, and determine the series of events leading to the shooting. Their findings will be submitted to the district attorney general for further review.
The TBI emphasized that their role is to act as fact-finders in the investigation, and the district attorney general will decide whether the officers’ actions were justified.
While the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that the scene is secure, and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Streets in the surrounding neighborhood, which had been closed during the standoff, were reopened by 7:15 p.m. that evening.
No additional details have been released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
