NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A shooting in Antioch early Sunday morning has left one man dead, with authorities now reviewing a self-defense claim in the case.

The Metro Nashville Police Department responded to a shooting at a home on Denise Drive, located in the 100 block, just before 3 a.m. on February 2. According to investigators, the incident unfolded after a group of friends returned home from a birthday celebration. Police said 39-year-old Maurice Blackmun assaulted a relative outside the house, which led to a confrontation when a 19-year-old intervened.

Witnesses told police that after everyone entered the home, Blackmun allegedly confronted the 19-year-old, putting him in a chokehold and threatening him and others with violence. The 19-year-old then drew a handgun and ordered Blackmun to stop before firing a single shot. The bullet struck Blackmun, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed against the 19-year-old at this time, as law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances. The case will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office once the investigation is complete.

The shooting has sparked concerns among local residents about rising crime in the area. Paul McLaughlin, a neighbor, described how the neighborhood had changed since he moved there in 2015. “It used to be quiet, but now I’m not surprised to see police lights on the street. We do what we can to stay safe, but it’s becoming harder to feel secure,” he said.

Authorities have not yet released further information on the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
