RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. — A deadly single-vehicle crash brought traffic to a standstill on Interstate 840 Wednesday afternoon, temporarily closing all westbound lanes near mile marker 65.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), the crash was first reported at 2:45 p.m. at mile marker 64.8. In the immediate aftermath, TDOT officials closed all westbound lanes as emergency crews responded to the scene.
Erin Zeigler, a regional communications officer for TDOT, announced the closure on social media, confirming that westbound lanes were shut down near Exit 65 due to the severity of the crash. A medical helicopter was also dispatched, indicating the seriousness of the incident.
Shortly after the initial closure, Zeigler provided an update that vehicles were being allowed to pass along the right shoulder. By 5:23 p.m., all lanes had fully reopened, and traffic was flowing normally.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) later confirmed that the crash was fatal, though additional details about the victim or the circumstances leading up to the crash have not yet been released. A preliminary report from THP is pending.
