Cheatham County, Tenn. — A high school teacher from Cheatham County was arrested and fired after being found under the influence in a school zone on Friday, February 14.

Brandon Peters, 42, a teacher at Sycamore High School in Pleasant View, was charged with possession of a Schedule VI drug in a drug-free school zone and public intoxication. According to the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office, Peters was discovered in possession of a THC vape and a small quantity of marijuana while on school property.

Peters, who had been employed by the Cheatham County School District since 2024, was immediately terminated following the incident. In a statement, the district confirmed that there were no prior issues in his personnel file, but his employment was officially ended on the day of his arrest.

In addition to his teaching role, Peters also served as a coach for both wrestling at Sycamore Middle School and girls’ flag football at Sycamore High School, according to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

The Cheatham County School District issued a statement expressing its commitment to student safety. “The safety and well-being of our students is one of our top priorities, and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students,” the district said. “We are fully cooperating with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office in this ongoing investigation.”

As of now, further details regarding the investigation have not been released. The school district and law enforcement officials are continuing to work together to ensure a thorough resolution to the matter.

The incident has left the local community and school officials grappling with the implications of such an arrest involving a staff member. The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office has not yet provided additional comments on the situation.
